Realgar is dark red to orange red in colour and is also known as "ruby sulphur". Its name comes from the Arabic word “rah al-ghār,” which means “powder of the mine.” It was first discovered in regions with volcanic activity, including parts of China and Eastern Europe, where it has been mined for centuries.

In ancient China, people believed that Realgar could protect them, so they used it in rituals to drive away bad spirits. They also believed it would repel snakes.

Due to its bright red colour, it was frequently utilized in magical rituals for safeguarding and purifying purposes.

A photosensitive mineral, Realgar, will change to "pararealgar" with prolonged exposure to light. Pararealgar is unstable and will eventually crumble into a yellow powder if left in the light.

What is the difference between realgar and pararealgar? They are chemically identical. The only difference between them is how strong their atomic bonds are. Pararealgar is created when Realgar is exposed to light for a long period of time. This results in the physical structure being broken down into a powdery form.

Washing hands is recommended after handling realgar specimens, especially if they are powdery.

Realgar does well when paired with grounding stones like Black Obsidian, Black Tourmaline, Hematite and other black minerals. These combinations help balance its fiery energy. Dark, stabilizing crystals enhance its protective qualities and boosts its energizing effects.

It often grows with Orpiment which is a lemon yellow to golden brownish yellow gem.
